Charles A. Metcalf, Jr., 22, student, saved John P. Pearse, 13, schoolboy, from drowning, Toledo, Ohio, August 11, 1914. A number of Boy Scouts who were bathing off Cedar Point in Lake Erie became distressed in deep water. Eight boys, including John, were struggling at the surface when Metcalf, having run a quarter-mile, arrived at the scene. He immediately entered the water and saved two boys without much trouble. He then swam 200 feet to John and started ashore with him. Metcalf was becoming exhausted and was twice submerged by John’s struggles. He finally succeeded in getting John to the end of a 30-foot rope that was extended toward him, and he and John were helped ashore. Metcalf was too weak to stand and expelled considerable water, and he was nervous for about a week. John was also very weak, but he recovered. 13643-1222
