Charles A. Shanefelt, 31, engineer, died attempting to save James Malone, 14, laborer; Edward Malone, 10; Mino Lizzie, 12, and Romanelli Spinelli, 16, laborer, from drowning, Bradenville, Pennsylvania, January 21, 1916. The boys broke through spongy ice on Duquesne Reservoir, 15 feet from the bank, where the water was eight feet deep. Shanefelt ran to the hole in the ice and leaned over it to help the boys out, but the ice broke under him and let him into the hole. One of the boys climbed on his back, and he was unable to climb out. Other men came to the bank and tried the ice but were afraid to venture out, and Shanefelt and the four boys were drowned. 16057-1193
