Charles B. Hamilton, Jr., died attempting to save Victor W. Otto from drowning, Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, July 25, 1917. Otto, 19, bookkeeper, got into difficulty while swimming in Silver Lake 180 feet from shore, where the water was over six feet deep. Hamilton, 26, assistant chemist, who was a fair swimmer, swam 10 feet to him and grasped his arm. Otto then grasped Hamilton’s shoulders and submerged him twice. Hamilton broke away from Otto and called for help, but Otto grasped him again at the front of his bathing suit. A man swam 70 feet to them, and Otto took hold of him. All this time and while the man swam 10 feet toward shore with them, Otto held to Hamilton, keeping him submerged most of the time. Then, feeling stronger, Otto released both men, and Hamilton sank and was drowned. Otto and the other man swam about 20 feet to wadable water. 18456-1456
