Charles C. Abray helped to save Benjamin M. C. Drewes from drowning, Leduc, Alberta, April 17, 1994. Benjamin, 8, was with his older brother and their father in a boat in an area of open water of Coal Lake, which was otherwise frozen over. The boat tipped, spilling them into the frigid water about 100 feet from the bank, and Benjamin was trapped beneath the boat, tangled in a net. Abray, 32, who was fishing from the bank, entered the water and swam to the boat. He submerged, found Benjamin, then, grasping Benjamin by the leg, resurfaced. Another man who had swum out lifted the boat, and Abray then pulled Benjamin from beneath it. Abray swam to the bank with Benjamin while the other man rescued the father and brother. Abray was cold and sustained cuts, and Benjamin was observed at the hospital. They recovered.
