Charles C. Smedley, 16, schoolboy, saved Gerald A. Thayer, 16, delivery boy, from drowning, Traverse City, Michigan, July 8, 1926. Gerald dived from a boat into water 12 feet deep about 150 feet from the shore of Boardman Lake. He tried to regain the boat, but it moved farther from him, and he called to Charles for help. Charles, who was tired from swimming, swam 140 feet from near shore to Gerald, and Gerald grabbed him, pinning his arms to his sides. They were submerged. Charles freed himself, took hold of Gerald’s hair, and rose to the surface. Then with great effort he swam to shore with Gerald, the total distance being greater than he had ever swum before. Gerald was unconscious but was revived. 26780-2256
