Charles C. Yarrington, 32, merchant, rescued Zora A. Ward, 18; Algie E. Milburn, 16; C. Clyde Collins, 19, and Mildred Johnson, 16, from a runaway, Fayetteville, Arkansas, April 30, 1915. The young women were in a surrey drawn by a horse that got beyond control and ran away. Hurrying to the middle of the street to meet the horse as it advanced at a speed of 15 m.p.h., Yarrington made a running leap, caught the bridle, and hung with his feet off the ground. His weight swerved the horse toward a pole just outside the curb. With his feet on the curb and his shoulder against the horse, Yarrington pushed with all his might and barely avoided being carried against the pole. He clung to the horse, his feet touching the curb only at intervals, and pressed on the horse’s nostrils to stop its breath. The horse stopped 340 feet from where Yarrington had seized it. None of the persons involved was injured. 14769-1159
