Charles D. Whitehead saved Lola I. McDonald and Ruth E. Kershaw from drowning, Medina, Washington, August 2, 1931. While Mrs. McDonald, 27, was swimming in Lake Washington, she became panic stricken 80 feet from shore and climbed upon the shoulders of Mrs. Kershaw, 33, who was swimming close to her, and submerged her. Whitehead, 30, auditor, who was clothed, was attracted by screams, dived from a dock, and swam 30 feet to Mrs. McDonald, who grabbed hold of him. He went under the water and broke her hold. While beneath the surface he saw Mrs. Kershaw under the water. Placing his feet on the bottom and taking hold of each woman at the hips, he jumped upward, pushing the women toward the shore. Repeating this action several times while Mrs. McDonald was trying to grab him, he pushed the women 25 feet to wadable water. Mrs. Kershaw was unconscious but was revived. 31477-2642
