Charles E. Wells died attempting to save Caroline A. Chapin from drowning, Long Beach, California, April 26, 1926. While Mrs. Chapin, 57, was bathing in the San Pedro Channel, she drifted into deep water. Almost fully clothed, Wells, 36, hoisting engineer, waded 160 feet toward her, plunged through the breakers five feet high, and swam with difficulty within 30 feet of her. Men in a boat reached Mrs. Chapin, and while she was being taken into the boat, Wells disappeared. He was drowned. 26200-2153
