Charles F. Cardinell, 21, deckhand, saved Theodosia Claypool, 38, from drowning, Rockaway, Oregon, August 26, 1923. While Mrs. Claypool was swimming in the Pacific Ocean, she was carried by a strong undertow to a point 450 feet from shore. The surf was rough, and she could make no progress toward shore. After other capable swimmers had refused to go to Mrs. Claypool’s aid, Cardinell waded 300 feet from shore and then swam to Mrs. Claypool. As he took hold of her, a wave separated them, and Mrs. Claypool grabbed his bathing suit at the back of the neck. Cardinell tried to find bottom but was submerged and swallowed water. He rose and swam 200 feet to waist-deep water, towing Mrs. Claypool. Other bathers then aided both to shore. 23745-2075
