Charles F. Mundell, 60, clothing buyer, sustained fatal injuries saving Celia L. Welsh, 45, from being struck by an automobile, Wichita, Kansas, February 14, 1953. Mrs. Welsh stopped to talk with Mundell on a sidewalk at the corner of a crowded intersection. The driver of a sedan parked at the curb 16 feet from the intersection failed to straighten the front wheels after starting the motor and lost control of the vehicle, which climbed the curb and, at a speed of 5 to 10 m.p.h., veered diagonally across the sidewalk toward Mrs. Welsh and Mundell, who stood three feet apart. Mundell grasped Mrs. Welsh at the front of her coat and shoved her three feet sideward out of the path of the sedan, and she fell to the sidewalk, escaping serious injury. Mundell then staggered backward a step and was struck from behind and thrown beneath the sedan, which continued into the street and dragged Mundell 65 feet before he dropped free of the automobile. Mundell died later that day of internal injuries. 3889-42792
