Charles F. Sanborn, 41, salesman, attempted to save Elzura H. Chandler, 19, from drowning, Ocean Bluff, Massachusetts, September 5, 1917. Miss Chandler was swept off her feet by the undertow while bathing in the Atlantic Ocean 15 feet from shore, became unconscious, and drifted farther from shore. Sanborn ran into the surf and swam through breakers six feet high to Miss Chandler, reaching her 50 feet from shore. He swam and pushed her 30 feet toward shore, and another man then took her to shore. Sanborn struggled to shore in an exhausted condition. Miss Chandler was revived. 20480-1575
