Charles Frederick Gove, 39, machinist’s helper, saved Edward Fisher, 14, schoolboy, and Helen Fisher, 12, from drowning, East Dedham, Massachusetts, March 6, 1922. As Edward and Helen were walking on thin and porous ice on Mill Pond, they broke through the ice five feet from the bank, where the water was eight to 10 feet deep. Edward supported Helen and called for help. Although unable to swim and aware of the condition of the ice, Gove ran 110 feet over the ice to the hole, and as he reached for Edward, the ice broke under him and he fell head first into the water. Helen grasped him around the neck, Edward caught hold of him, and Gove grasped the ice at the edge of the hole for support. Three young men then arrived, and forming a chain, they drew Gove and the two children upon the ice. 22242-1909
