Charles G. Matlock, Jr., 22, automobile demonstrator, died attempting to save Marian R. Creamer, 21, from drowning, Atlantic City, New Jersey, June 20, 1915. Marian, a strong swimmer, was bathing in the ocean with her sister and two men. They were carried out by a strong current and became distressed in deep water. Lifeguards experienced extreme difficulty in saving the two men, who were poor swimmers. The women kept afloat but were helpless in the current that swept through a gully parallel to the beach. Directing another bather to aid the sister, who was nearer shore, Matlock waded some distance and then swam at least 100 feet to Marian. Whether he gave her assistance is not known. She was supported for a while by several men, but Matlock and one of the other men were drowned, as was Marian. 15084-1178
