Charles G. Schlabig saved Helen J. Martinson from drowning, Sabula, Pennsylvania, July 8, 1919. Helen, 15, stepped into deep water while wading in Sabula Lake. She struggled and was carried to a point 22 feet from the bank. Schlabig, 27, clerk, who had not swum for years because his left arm was subject to dislocation, jumped into the water, waded a short distance, and dived about 12 feet to Helen, who was sinking and was unconscious. He grasped her with his left hand and brought her to the surface. A companion of Helen’s, who was threshing nearby, grasped Schlabig and tried to climb on his back, causing the three to sink. As Schlabig touched bottom, he sprang toward the surface, but the movement dislocated his arm. Although he became weak from pain, Schlabig retained hold of Helen, struggled to the surface, and got a footing in wadable water. Her companion still clung to Schlabig, and he stumbled to the bank with both girls. 19746-1710
