Charles Gregory Hemmer, 14, schoolboy, saved Forrest W. Milne, 15, and Robert T. Ingersoll, 11, schoolboys, from drowning, Gloucester, Massachusetts, February 15, 1918. While Forrest and Robert were on a cake of ice in the Mill River, the cake broke, and they fell in the water, where it was 10 feet deep. They could not swim. Charles on shore removed his coat, ran 25 feet on unbroken ice and 65 feet across ice cakes, jumped into the river, and swam 50 feet to an ice cake near Forrest. He got on the cake and drew Forrest onto it. A man who had poled an ice cake to the one Charles was on gave his pole to Charles and later took charge of Forrest. Charles poled the cake about two feet toward another cake near Robert, jumped on that cake, and drew Robert onto it. All were then taken to the banks in boats. Forrest was unconscious but was revived. Robert was not seriously affected. 18718-1594
