Charles H. Bennett died attempting to save Louise W. Heath from drowning, Patchogue, New York, July 3, 1921. While wading in the Atlantic Ocean 50 feet off Fire Island Beach, Mrs. Heath, 39, was unable to make progress toward shore because of a strong current. Bennett, 55, bookkeeper, waded and swam 30 feet to her, and he and Mrs. Heath’s husband supported her, but the current carried them into deep water farther from shore. Two young men swam to them to give aid, but they got into the current, became frightened, and returned to shore exhausted. The three drifted 200 feet from shore, Bennett remaining beside Mrs. Heath and supporting her after her husband became helpless. About 10 minutes after he started to give aid, Bennett also became helpless, and all, separated, were finally carried toward shore by the waves. A young man then swam out with a rope tied to him and recovered the bodies. None could be revived. 21878-1731
