Charles H. Taylor saved Marjorie E. Martin from drowning, Centerville, California, June 24, 1931. Marjorie, 14, who could swim but a few feet, drifted in a current into water six feet deep in Kings River. Taylor, 40, mechanic, who was a poor swimmer and weak from illness and fully clothed, waded from the bank and swam 15 feet to her. She grabbed him around the head or shoulders submerging him. While entirely submerged, Taylor took hold of her and tried to walk on bottom toward wadable water. A boy who was a good swimmer then reached them, pulled Marjorie from Taylor, and swam with her to wadable water. Taylor rose to the surface very tired and made no effort to grab an inflated rubber tube that was thrown to him. A woman reached him and pulled him to wadable water. Marjorie was unconscious but was revived. 32340-2621
