Charles Henry Shears, 44, molder, attempted to save Petru Acsinte, 47, cupola tender, from suffocation, Salem, Ohio, February 5, 1929. Acsinte was the man who fell into the cupola. After Barsan was pulled out, Shears, holding his breath, lowered himself into the cupola. One end of the rope was lowered to him. He put it under Acsinte’s body under his arms and passed the end of the rope to men at the door and then held the rope close around Acsinte as the men pulled Acsinte up to the door. The men then took Acsinte out. Shears had been forced to breathe. He extended his hands to men at the other door, and, as he was being pulled out, he became unconscious. Acsinte was dead. Shears was fully disabled for 11 weeks and was weak and nervous for at least six months afterward. (See case of JOHN ALFRED SANDERS.)
