Charles Joseph Dupuis died after attempting to rescue M. Grace Lawlor from a runaway, Wayland, Massachusetts, August 29, 1931. As Mrs. Lawlor, 25, was riding horseback, the horse became unmanageable and ran on a concrete road at a gallop of 20 m.p.h. Her efforts to check the horse were ineffective, and she cried for help as she passed an automobile containing Dupuis, 47, master mechanic. The automobile was driven 300 feet ahead of the horse, and Dupuis got out of it. As the horse galloped close to him, Dupuis made a lunge and reached to grab the bridle, but the horse reared and knocked him down. Dupuis sustained fractures of the skull and 10 ribs and died the next night. The horse continued to run two miles or more before it was stopped. Mrs. Lawlor was not injured. 31563-2637
