Charles L. Collins saved Harriet C. Fraser from drowning, Old Orchard, Maine, August 5, 1914. Miss Fraser, 21, and a companion were swimming in the Atlantic Ocean about 100 feet from shore and were carried farther from shore by the undertow, despite their efforts to swim back to wadable water. They called for help. The surf was rough, and the breakers were five feet high. Collins, 21, clerk, waded from the shore, swam 50 feet to Miss Fraser, grasped her around the waist with his right arm, and swam toward shore with her but made poor progress against the undertow. After he swam with her to within 20 feet of wadable water, a boat containing two men reached them. Collins got into the boat and drew Miss Fraser into it, but it capsized. Collins swam to Miss Fraser and swam with her to the boat, which was bottom up. They and the two men who had been in the boat clung to the boat, and it drifted to wadable water. Collins was fatigued. Miss Fraser was exhausted but was not seriously affected. Her companion was rescued by another man. 13842-1504
