Charles Louis Van Zandt, 36, printer, saved an unidentified girl from being killed by a train, Chicago, Illinois, February 16, 1918. The girl attempted to get aboard a moving train at Kedzie Station. She grasped the handrail of a car but missed the step, and she was dragged along the track. While the train was moving about 8 m.p.h., Van Zandt ran 45 feet on the station platform, which was covered with snow, seized the girl, and tried to lift her to the step. After Van Zandt ran 100 feet holding the girl, the girl fell on the station platform, and Van Zandt fell under the train just outside the rail. He lay still till the train passed.
