Charles M. Filliettaz saved Philip Scharff from drowning, Auburn, Maine, August 13, 1922. Scharff, 22, store manager, was seized with cramp while swimming in Taylor Pond 175 feet from the bank, and he struggled wildly in water 10 feet deep. Filliettaz, 23, salesman, swam 60 feet to Scharff and grasped his bathing suit from behind, but Scharff instantly turned and clutched him. Both sank, and Filliettaz freed himself under water. After Scharff had risen near him and had sunk again, Filliettaz went under the surface, took hold of Scharff, rose, and swam slowly and with great difficulty 30 feet to a raft. Scharff was then unconscious, and he and Filliettaz were assisted upon the raft and later taken to the bank in a boat. Scharff was revived. 23261-1971
