Charles O. Beam died attempting to help save Isabelle M. Hepburn, 25; Catherine R. McCauslin, 20, and Mildred G. McCormick, 19, from drowning, Bower, Pennsylvania, July 18, 1923. While wading in the West Branch of the Susquehanna River, the three women got into water over their depth and struggled together. Beam, 29, shopkeeper, swam 80 feet to them. One or more of the women grasped him, and in a struggle that followed he was unable to swim with them. The husband of one of the women reached them about the same time as Beam, but he was also seized before he could be of any assistance. Miss McCormick became separated from the others, drifted away from them, and was rescued. The other two women, Beam, and the other man were drowned.
