Charles Otho Winburne, Jr., saved Anna Louise Evans from drowning, San Angelo, Texas, August 30, 1941. While swimming in the South Concho River, Anna, 17, suffered cramp and drifted in a current of one m.p.h. to water six feet deep 35 feet from the bank. Charles, 11, schoolboy, swam 25 feet to Anna and tried to tow her upstream to a sandbar, but they drifted farther. Anna floated on her back and stroked with her arms but was afraid to use her legs. Several times Charles gave her additional support as she quit stroking and began to sink. After they had drifted 30 feet, Charles pushed Anna at her feet toward the bank. In the meantime Lewis M. Nelson had run 650 feet to the sandbar; and he swam 50 feet to within six feet of Anna. Becoming distressed, he swam 10 feet directly toward the bank, sank, and was drowned. After Charles had pushed Anna 30 feet, they got hold of a tree branch and reached the bank, Charles having supported or pushed Anna for 10 minutes, Charles was winded and tired. 39222-3235
