Charles R. Franklin, 27, automobile mechanic, attempted to save Thomas M. Walsh, 24, automobile mechanic, from drowning, Green Haven, Maryland, June 19, 1927. While Walsh was swimming in Stony Creek, he was seized with cramp in both legs and became helpless. Franklin waded from a point close to the bank and then swam 125 feet to Walsh and took hold of him. Walsh seized him in a tight grasp around the neck and also pinned one of Franklin’s arms to his side. After a struggle, in which Franklin’s efforts to get free were futile, they sank together and became unconscious. A youth, who was a good swimmer, swam to them and towed them 55 feet to a wharf. Both were revived. 28669-2239
