Charles R. Gedney, Jr., saved an indeterminate number of persons from a falling pole, Seattle, Washington, October 3, 1985. Gedney, 47, manufacturer’s sales agent, was in the doorway of an office when he saw a wooden telephone pole, fractured in an earlier accident, begin to sway. Believing the pole might fall onto the adjacent busy highway, Gedney ran into the street, waving his arms to warn oncoming motorists. Several approaching vehicles stopped as the pole fell across the highway, striking Gedney. Gedney was hospitalized for extensive injuries, including a fractured skull and broken vertebrae. 60686-6991
