Charles S. Baker died attempting to save Clarence C. Harmon from drowning, Hartland, West Virginia, July 4, 1934. While wading in the Elk River, Clarence, 11, unexpectedly stepped into water 25 feet deep in a hole 50 feet long and 25 feet wide and called for help. After being briefly submerged, he drifted 30 feet in the hole and sank. At Clarence’s call Baker, 26, taxicab driver, who was almost fully clothed, waded 130 feet toward the hole, plunged into it, and immediately sank. Both Clarence and Baker were drowned.
