Charles S. Foster, 41, merchant, saved Nils O. Bagge, 54, consulting engineer, from suffocation, Benham, North Carolina, June 22, 1923. Bagge was overcome by gas at the bottom of a mine shaft, 45 feet deep. At least two men with ropes around them descended the shaft part way for Bagge but felt the gas affecting them and ascended. Foster, having a rope around him, then descended ladders resting on platforms to the bottom, put another rope on Bagge, and ascended the ladders, steadying Bagge as men at the top drew him up by means of the rope. Bagge was revived. 23920-1884
