Charles S. Frost, 18, schoolboy, attempted to save A. Stanley Kratz, Jr., 18, schoolboy, from drowning, Glass, Virginia, September 7, 1929. Kratz fell from a boat into water 18 feet deep in the Severn River, and the boat drifted away from him. Frost ran 600 feet to the end of a pier and swam 500 feet to Kratz, whom he towed a few feet. Kratz then collapsed. With the utmost exertion Frost supported Kratz and swam 350 feet against a current toward the pier. He then called to men on the pier for aid and said that he would not be able to reach the pier. A box drifted near Frost, and he gained support on it as he supported Kratz until a young boy reached them in a rowboat. Frost and Kratz were taken to the pier, where Frost collapsed, but he recovered. Kratz could not be revived.
