Charles Trujillo died after helping to save Fred P. Carranza from drowning, Half Moon Bay, California, May 15, 1976. While wading in the Pacific Ocean, Fred, 6, a non-swimmer, was caught by an undertow and carried seaward. Trujillo, 23, construction laborer, entered the water and swam through breakers to Fred, who then was about 120 feet from the beach. Holding Fred’s head above water, Trujillo towed him some distance toward shore; and from there Fred then was aided to safety by others. After being relieved of Fred, Trujillo was carried seaward by the current. He sank and drowned.
