Charles W. Butcher, 25, plumber’s helper, died attempting to save Evelyn C. Cunningham, 14, from drowning, Modesto, California, May 30, 1926. (See case of LOUISE A. CORGIAT.) Butcher, who was fully clothed, dived from the bank and reached Evelyn 25 feet from the bank. She grabbed his throat with both hands and climbed upon his back.
