Charles W. Gilbert, 37, farmhand, died attempting to save Helen M. Adams, 11, from drowning, Petrolia, California, July 10, 1916. Helen was carried by the current into a deep pool in the Mattole River and became distressed. Gilbert waded from the bank and swam toward her, but she sank and was drowned when he was 10 feet away. He turned to return to the bank, but he swam at the surface for a minute without making progress and then sank and was drowned.
