Charles W. Kabisius attempted to save Francis L. Doyle from drowning, Ocean Park, California, August 31, 1921. Doyle, 30, author, became helpless while swimming in Santa Monica Bay 600 feet from shore. Kabisius, 34, student, swam about 530 feet to him. There were breakers about seven feet high, and the water was choppy. Kabisius supported Doyle and swam with him 500 feet toward shore, his hold being broken once by a large wave. Doyle collapsed and became unconscious. In response to Kabisius’s calls, another man helped Kabisius take Doyle through the breakers 100 feet from shore to wadable water. Kabisius was almost exhausted. Doyle could not be revived.
