Chester O. Bailey, 21, ranch-hand, died attempting to save Carol Rose Colbo, 16, from drowning, Elgin, Montana, July 10, 1938. While wading in Box Elder Creek, Miss Colbo stepped into unwadable water, and drifted in a current of two m.p.h. to water 11 feet deep 15 feet from the bank. Bailey waded and then swam 15 feet to Miss Colbo and took hold of her. He called for help; and a boy, who was a good swimmer, swam to Miss Colbo and took hold of her. Neither Bailey nor the boy moved Miss Colbo toward the bank. They drifted briefly with the current, and then the boy left them and swam to the bank. Almost immediately Bailey was submerged. He rose at a point 25 feet farther from the bank and then sank and was drowned. Miss Colbo also was drowned.
