Christine L. Beheler died attempting to rescue a boy from drowning, Cortland, Ohio, July 29, 2019. The boy, 12, was in a designated swimming area of Mosquito Creek Lake when he chased a ball into deeper water and began to struggle to remain afloat. Beheler, 41, stay-at-home mom, was on the nearby beach when she entered the water and reached the boy at a point about 150 feet from shore, but during the encounter between them, the boy submerged her. An off-duty police officer nearby was alerted and swam out to them, as did a teacher. The officer reached Beheler, who was facedown and unresponsive in the water, and the teacher approached the boy. The officer grasped Beheler, turned her over, grasped her, and swam, towing her to a point near shore. The officers and others brought her onto beach where efforts were made to resuscitate her. The teacher swam to shore, using a pool noodle to tow the boy. The boy vomited water and went to the hospital for observation. He was treated and released, and he recovered. Beheler was taken by ambulance to a hospital, but she could not be revived. She had drowned.
