Christine v.G. Duemler saved Shirley N. Bordson from a runaway automobile, Madison, Wisconsin, June 13, 1988. Miss Bordson, 41, was slumped over the steering wheel of her car, which was traveling south in the northbound lanes of a busy urban thoroughfare. Driving on the same highway, Mrs. Duemler, 33, homemaker, had seen Miss Bordson’s car enter the northbound lanes, and she immediately pulled to the side of the highway and parked. Mrs. Duemler then ran into the northbound lanes and caught up to Miss Bordson’s car, approaching it on the passenger side. As the car maintained traveling against traffic, Mrs. Duemler opened the passenger door and entered the car. Miss Bordson revived, and she accelerated the car. As northbound traffic swerved to avoid them, Mrs. Duemler took the car out of gear and applied its hand brake, stopping it.
