Christopher Ferland helped to save Kimberly A. Scholle from drowning, Narragansett, Rhode Island, May 7, 1989. Kimberly, 15, was on the rocky shore of the Atlantic Ocean when she was swept into the water by a large wave. Carried away from shore, she shouted for help. Christopher, 16, high school student, jumped in after her, but the rough water kept him at the rocks along the shore. After removing some of his attire, Christopher again entered the water and was successful in swimming to Kimberly, who was then being aided by another youth. When a life ring attached to a rope had been obtained by those on shore and thrown out to them, Christopher swam to retrieve the ring, which he then took back to Kimberly and the other youth. Together they swam and were pulled back to the rocks, where they were helped out of the water by the others. Kimberly was treated at the hospital for hypothermia; she recovered. Christopher recovered from scrapes to his legs.
