Christopher L. Williams, 32, laborer, rescued Marie Mocabee, 4, from a runaway, Dayton, Ohio, August 26, 1916. Marie was in a buggy to which a spirited horse was hitched. The horse broke away from a man who was about to tie it, pulling the bit from its mouth, and ran along the street in a zigzag course, plunging as it ran. Two men made ineffectual efforts to stop it. As it approached a railroad crossing, Williams ran onto the street, grasped its mane, and jumped upward, throwing his leg over its back and his arm around its neck. With his free hand he seized its throat near the jaw and pressed it to cut off the horse’s wind. The horse stopped 270 feet from where Williams had reached it. Neither Williams nor Marie was injured. 17141-1373
