Christopher Strickland saved Shannon L. Holloway from drowning, Folly Beach, South Carolina, August 13, 1987. Shannon, 11, shouted for help from a point in the Atlantic Ocean about 200 feet from the beach. Christopher, 17, high school student, ran into the water and swam to her. She held onto his shoulders while he swam back to shore against a seaward current. Before reaching shore, Christopher developed cramps; others who had arrived waded to him and took Shannon the remaining distance. Christopher was exhausted, but he recovered.
