Christopher W. Burrows rescued Joseph Santiago from burning, Orlando, Florida, June 5, 1990. Joseph, 1, was inside his mother’s first-floor apartment when fire broke out in the living room and filled the apartment with dense smoke. Alerted to the fire, Burrows, 28, maintenance man at the apartment complex, used his master key to unlock the apartment’s front door, then, despite the smoke and intense heat, he entered the unit and crawled into the burning living room. Finding Joseph on the floor, Burrows picked him up, then exited the apartment with him. Joseph was hospitalized six weeks for treatment of burns to 22 percent of his body.
