Clair Pressley Bartley, 13, schoolboy, saved Anthony D. Buckley, 11, schoolboy, from drowning, Meridian, Pennsylvania, March 29, 1945. Anthony, who could not swim, jumped from a raft into water 10 feet deep in a pool 18 feet from an exposed dam at the end of the pool. Fully clothed, Clair dived from the dam and swam to Anthony, who was submerged except for one hand, and pulled him to the surface. After a struggle in which he was submerged, Clair held Anthony by his trousers and swam six feet to the raft. Holding Anthony against the raft with one arm and holding to the raft, Clair swam toward the dam. Anthony broke free and climbed onto Clair’s back; but Clair held to the raft and swam to the dam, where they got footing in wadable water.
