Clarence A. Hitchborn, 15, schoolboy, saved Clarence E. Lampshire, 9, from drowning, Grand Junction, Colorado, July 27, 1915. Lampshire tried to swim across the Gunnison River. When he was 100 feet from the bank, he lost control of himself, began struggling, and went under the surface momentarily twice. Hitchborn swam 115 feet from the bank to him, and Lampshire took hold of his extended hand, climbed on his back, and submerged him in water five to six feet deep. Hitchborn realized he could not break Lampshire’s hold, and he waded about 75 feet toward the bank with him. He got his head above the surface at times by standing on rocks but was submerged most of the time. Another boy met them and waded with Lampshire to shallow water. Hitchborn then lost consciousness and sank in wadable water. The boy who aided Lampshire returned to Hitchborn and took him to the bank. Hitchborn revived. 15147-1533
