Clarence H. Smith, 13, schoolboy, saved Mary C. Hill, 16, from drowning, Bay City, Michigan, July 26, 1917. Mary and three other girls fell from a raft into the West Channel of the Saginaw River, where the water was about 12 feet deep. Clarence dived into the river and swam about 180 feet to the raft. One of the girls had drowned. Clarence assisted two of the girls onto the raft and to the top of a wall near it. He then swam about 40 feet to a point where Mary was sinking, dived, grasped her hair, and brought her to the surface. She grasped his wrist, but he broke her hold and swam about 40 feet with her to the wall. She was assisted to the top of the wall, and Clarence climbed the wall. 18329-1545
