Clarence J. Pope, 20, student, attempted to save James McCutcheon II, 20, from burning, Ithaca, New York, December 7, 1906. During a fire that destroyed the Chi Psi Fraternity House at Cornell University, Pope, while making his escape, stopped on the stone balcony onto which opened a window in McCutcheon’s room on the third floor. Although his hands were severely burned, Pope made three attempts to reach McCutcheon, who was prostrate inside. While endeavoring to pull him from the room, Pope fell back over the balcony, striking a porch roof below and thence falling to the ground. No serious injuries were sustained. 1528-89
