Clarence M. Smith, 27, clerk, saved Pamilla Gillette, 21, from drowning, Pablo Beach, Florida, July 30, 1924. While swimming in the Atlantic Ocean, Miss Gillette became exhausted by her efforts to return to wadable water against a strong undertow. Smith ran 900 feet to the water, waded 150 feet, and swam 200 feet to her. She was then unconscious. He caught hold of her bathing suit and swam 100 feet with her to breakers, through which he was able to pass after having been repeatedly driven back by a strong undercurrent. He waded toward shore and dropped exhausted in the water near shore, but he received aid. Two boys reached Miss Gillette as Smith fell and took her to shore. She was revived. 24638-2055
