Clarence McCallister saved Glenn A. Germany from assault, North Braddock, Pennsylvania, May 5, 2024. Germany, 54, was delivering a sermon on the altar of a church sanctuary when a 26-year-old man approached the altar, aimed a loaded pistol at Germany, and pulled the trigger, but the gun failed to fire. Germany sought cover under a pulpit. As the assailant lifted one leg over a railing to access the altar, McCallister, 63, a heavy equipment repair specialist who had been recording video of the service, ran about 10 feet to the railing, leapt over it, and took the assailant to the ground, controlling the assailant’s arms. Seeing that McCallister had control of the assailant, Germany responded and grasped the assailant’s wrists and the gun’s barrel, until McCallister pulled the weapon from their grasp. Germany restrained the assailant until police arrived about 20 minutes later. The assailant was taken into custody and jailed where he awaits further court proceedings. McCallister and Germany were not injured.
