Clarence Van Nostrand, 16, attempted to save T. Waverly Doxey, 10, and saved Florence E. Doxey, 13, and Frank Halvorsen, 13, from drowning, Glen Cove, New York, January 8, 1911. Clarence ran from the bank across thawing ice on Upper Lake toward Waverly and Frank, who had broken through at a point 30 feet from the bank, where the water was over six feet deep. Before he could reach the hole, Florence also broke through. Clarence went close to the hole and extended a short stick to Waverly, who grasped it and gave it a quick jerk, causing Clarence to break through the ice. Clarence immediately swam to Florence, who could not swim. He placed one arm on the ice and used the other to push her up on it until she was able to get out of the hole. He then swam to Frank and pushed him up in the same way. Clarence then climbed up on the ice and went home. Men rescued Waverly by throwing a rope to him. 6148-700
