Clifford L. Treado, 28, laborer, saved Joseph R. St. Pierre, 18, deckhand, from being crushed, Superior, Wisconsin, July 30, 1946. At night as the ship on which St. Pierre was employed was being maneuvered alongside a dock in Allouez Bay, St. Pierre, who was being lowered in a boatswain’s chair, fell into water 24 feet deep 4.5 feet below the floor of the dock. The ship, which had vertical sides and was five feet from the dock, was moving forward at the rate of 18 inches a second and slightly slower toward the dock. Treado lay prone on the dock, his head and body from the waist hanging down from the edge, took hold of St. Pierre with one hand, braced himself briefly with his other hand against the ship, and raised St. Pierre slightly. Being forced by St. Pierre’s weight to lower him, Treado wriggled backward, braced himself with one hand on the dock, and pulled St. Pierre upward onto the dock. Both cleared the area between the ship and the dock when the ship was within 18 inches of it and still moving. 40771-3513
