Clifford L. Walburn, 36, farmhand, died attempting to save Jack W. Bloom, 16, schoolboy, from drowning, Richland, Kansas, August 27, 1946. Bloom fell into the Wakarusa River and was submerged several times, drifting to a point 12 feet from the bank, where the water was 8.5 feet deep. After one man made an effort to aid Bloom, Walburn waded from the opposite bank and swam 30 feet to the point at which Bloom had disappeared. Bloom rose and threw his arms around Walburn, who sank with him. Their heads reappeared near the surface, a hand of one extending above the water for a moment. Their bodies were recovered 30 minutes later, force being required to separate them. 40914-3498
