Clinton B. Runner, 19, farmer, saved Pearl E., 3; Lelah O., 5, and Cecil V. Hungerford, 7, from burning, Hershey, Nebraska, March 26, 1910. His hands having been burned as a result of coming in contact with a fierce prairie fire that had swept over the farm on which he was working, Runner ran to a cave in which the three children had been left. Although the flames were burning about the door, and the cave, which was dug six feet below the surface, was filled with smoke, he entered and found Pearl. He lifted her to the surface and carried her to nearby water tanks. He wet his clothing, returned to the cave, and got Lelah and Cecil and took them to the tanks. Shortly afterward, the roof of the cave fell in. The children were not burned but were unconscious from the smoke. They were revived later. Runner sustained burns on his neck and hands. 4973-498
